Cardiopulmonary rescue (CPR) should be initiated within 60 seconds of discovering a patient with cardiac arrest. When patients are severely ill, their physicians sometimes decide not to resuscitate them if their heart stops. It is important that these decisions are communicated to the medical staff that are closest to the patient at the time of cardiac arrest.
