Summer School: Ethics, Data & Innovation in the International Research Community

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, this event has been cancelled. But we are eyeing May 2021 for the next iteration! Stay tuned for more information.

Collaborative research projects are a key aspect of international research, and the biomedical sciences. To respond to ethical issues raised by biomedical research, training on the ethics of research and innovation is crucial.

This summer, Uppsala University's Centre for Research Ethics & Bioethics (CRB) and the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA) are co-organising a summer school titled "Ethics, Data & Innovation in the International Research Community". The event takes place in Athens, Greece 15-19 June 2020 and provides an opportunity for researchers to familiarise themselves with the main aspects of bioethics, data protection and intellectual property. And learn how to use this knowledge for the purpose of conducting original scientific research in compliance with international ethical principles, standards and regulations. Applications open 1 February 2020.

Ethics, Data & Innovation in the International Research Community

This initiative is the first of it's kind, offering interdisciplinary training with globally recognised experts and combining lectures with practical training. Giving participants the specific tools they need to apply for big, international grants, and submitting project proposals to the Eurpean Commission within the Horizon 2020 Programme (Ethics Self-Assessment) and the HEALTH tool on ethics and human rights developed by the Council of Europe. In addition, a Moot Court exercise will act as an interactive and original way of debating legal and ethical issues raised by biomedical research.

This summer school will...

  • Provide participants with a strong foundation in bioethics, data protection and intellectual property (IP) relevant to biomedical research, including international legal aspects
  • Educate participants on patent drafting and application procedures in collaboration with European Patent Office experts
  • Enhance participants’ ability to conceptualize, patent and solve bioethics research problems with increasing independence
  • Provide opportunities to interact with members of the international research community
  • Provide participants with the tools they need to submit project proposals that are compliant with international legal and ethical standards

All participants will be awarded with a diploma of attendance

Academy of Athens, Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of AthensThe Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA) based in Athens, Greece. For them, promoting science for society is pivotal. They organise seminars, workshops and public conferences that play a key role in promoting research results to the society and in increasing awareness of bioethical and intellectual property issues.

The Centre for Research Ethics & Bioethics (CRB) is a multi-disicplinary research environment with senior and junior staff from ethics, philosophy, medicine, nursing, economics, law and other fields. CRB researchers investigate the ethical, philosophical and legal aspects of biomedical research and clinical practice and publish the results of our research in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and in books.

BBMRI-ERICBBMRI-ERIC is a European research infrastructure for biobanking. They bring together all the main players from the biobanking field – researchers, biobankers, industry, and patients – to boost biomedical research. To that end, they offer quality management services, support with ethical, legal and societal issues, and a number of online tools and software solutions for biobankers and researchers. Ultimately, their goal is to make new treatments possible.
